Back to training

Having taken the last 3 weeks off to recovery from vertigo, I was very keen and excited to take part of this weekend’s 4D JKD Kali Spring Camp with the legend Guru Bob Breen. As my head was still spinning at times, a few people questioned if I should be training at all, but being honest, the excitement of training again means the adrenaline I got while training helped to keep me going over the 4 hours seminar on each days, and I got so happy afterwards that I don’t half care how much my head hurt and how tired I got afterwards.

The seminar was amazing! We covered a lot of materials on the Saturday, and then we spent some of Sunday’s session going over some of the moves again so we have better mental and muscle memories for the more complicated moves. We did single stick box drills with strips, stick and knife combos, JKD box drills with attacks and throws, hubuds, and ended both days with boxing sparring and stick sparring. I love learning new combos and techniques, but even more so on practicing the basic skills and receiving corrections and tips from the guru himself, my coach, and my training partner for the weekend, who was very gentle with me and checking up on me frequently to make sure the movements did not triggered my vertigo too much.

And to fuel this seminar, I opted for supermarket’s meal deal on both days. We only get about 20-30 minutes lunch break on the day, and the meal deals mean that I can get the food quickly, or maybe even before the training starts, and I can throw the items into my gym bag, and there are some good healthy choices as well as tasty ones. On training days, the key things I pay attention to are protein and carbohydrates, and that can be easily covered by sandwiches, wraps or a pasta salad, and I would normally make it more a balanced diet by selecting a vegetable snack and a bottle of fruit smoothie.
